Bosch GLM 50 C: the best laser range finder on the market?
If you want to measure distances quickly like a professional, indoors or outdoors, go for the Bosch GLM 50 C. Its main advantage is that you can get intelligent documentation from the measurements taken by this rangefinder because it is equipped Bluetooth which allows him to directly transfer data contained in its memory on a smartphone.
Waterproof, light and compact, the intrinsic qualities of the Bosch GLM 50 C suggest that it is an excellent laser range finder and it really is. Focus on the features of this device.
The strong points
The Bluetooth interface : The majority of the current devices are connected, including the Bosch GLM 50 C range finder. The advantage of such a function lies in the fact that you can record all the measurements you have taken to transfer and process them. in a Smartphone, to better analyze them via Bosch’s “Mesuring Master” application. The possibility to postpone these measurements on photos for example, allows you to transcribe them on a real project.
Features : The Bosch GLM 50 C lacks no standard functionality. You can evaluate the surface, volume and indirectly measure a distance with the inclinometer or the Pythagoras function. You also have the possibility to take continuous measurements by the tracking mode, all in a range limited to 50 m. All measurements taken are millimetric precision, in the range of + or – 1.5 mm, which is a correct figure for a rangefinder of this range.
Tracking function : Special mention for the tracking mode that allows you to postpone identical distances quickly and easily. When you activate this function, you have 2 measurements, namely the desired distance (displayed in blue) and the current distance of the rangefinder (in red). So you can move the range finder to the equivalent location at the desired distance.
Strength and waterproofness : To meet the needs of DIYers and professionals, the GLM 50 C must be strong and waterproof, especially if it claims to be an outdoor rangefinder. Its waterproofness is class IP54, compared to dust and water and makes it treated like any other tool on a building site. In addition it has a protective eraser on the corners and edges to prevent any shock of a reasonable height all the same.
The display : The display of the Bosch GLM 50 C rangefinder is rather large, compared to the entire camera. The information is divided into 4 lines of indications and is displayed in color, which makes it easier to read them. As the display is backlit and rotatable, you can read the indications both horizontally and vertically.
The weak spots
The price : It is clear that the sales price of the Bosch GLM 50 C is rather above the models having the same qualities and functions listed on this rangefinder. The reputation of the brand may play a lot, anyway, this device is really a great product.

How does a laser rangefinder work?
The laser range finder is a very easy-to-use device, which allows you to evaluate distances, but also to calculate surfaces and perimeters by its internal functions. Let’s break down the mode of operation of this kind of device.
The laser rangefinder, as the name implies, uses a laser beam to determine the distance between the device and a given target. The beam is sent at the touch of a button. The ray emitted, invisible to the naked eye is then projected on the target and returns to the rangefinder by ricochet. An electronic chip will then calculate the time it took for the ray to return to the device, in order to deduce the distance that separates you from your target.
The conditions of reliability
Several conditions are required for telemetry measurements to remain reliable, especially if the distance to be evaluated is close to the maximum range achievable by the device. First, the target and the range finder must be static and not moving. It is therefore necessary that your hand be so stable and not to tremble to be able to aim well the objective especially if it is placed at a good distance.
Then, the brightness should be in the middle, neither too strong nor too weak. The laser beam must also not cross obstacles of different densities (transparent glass or plastic plate, damp or very dry environment, fog or smoke).
The result and the problems encountered
Telemetry measurements are displayed on the unit’s display in a fraction of a second in the unit of measurement you desire. As mentioned above, the reliability of the measurements is based on a few conditions, but it is often difficult to obtain results if the target does not have a good reflectivity, as the case of a deer, for example. The range will therefore be shorter in this kind of eventuality.
How to choose a laser range finder?
There are several kinds of laser rangefinders, which adapt to specific situations such as construction, hunting or sports. Although their operating principle is the same, each rangefinder has its own characteristics. Especially since the prices are quite different for each model that must be well defined its range of use in order not to be wrong on the choice. In order to choose the right device for your needs, here are the key points to remember.
Battery life : To operate, the laser range finder draws energy from batteries or a battery. The latter offers greater autonomy compared to batteries, however, it is clear that the batteries are replaced once a year even in case of intensive use.
The difference is not noticeable if you use the rangefinder only occasionally or occasionally. As for the battery, we can say that its lifespan can be modified by weather conditions like many electronic devices.
The size and weight of the device : Without a shadow of a doubt, these are the most important parameters for a laser range finder. Depending on the purpose for which the device will be used, a heavier or lighter weight is recommended. For example, a hunter, whose mobility and responsiveness are key assets, must favor a lightweight and easy to store, the same for a construction worker or amateur handyman.
An athlete on a golf course will choose a heavier device, but perfectly stable. It will be the same for a professional who will be equipped in addition to tripod and wheels.
Priority mode : The ability of the device to read or not through an obstacle defines its priority mode. A device which determines the distance of the first object in its field of vision by ignoring all the rest that surrounds it is a first priority rangefinder. It is particularly useful for measuring on open ground.
On the other hand, a second-priority range finder can determine the distance of a more distant target on an unobstructed terrain (scrub, leaves, branches …). Other devices combine the two modes and offer settings that switch from one side or the other.
The crosshairs and the aiming points : These options help you to visualize the point on which the measurement will be based. The reticle should normally be visible on the dial of the rangefinder, and can take the form of a cross, a point or a circle. Avoid black line reticles at all costs and prefer LED models, which may be dominated by ambient light, but still offer real visibility.
Scope : Scope is the maximum distance in which the data presented by the rangefinder is qualified as reliable. Beyond this scope, it is necessary to express a doubt about the veracity of the measures taken.
However since this maximum range corresponds to optimal conditions of use, and that these are very rare or nonexistent, it is advisable to take a rangefinder whose range is 2 to 3 times greater than the distance you want to measure.
Functions : The laser rangefinder can include several other functions, besides measuring the distance between x and y. The calculation function is used to evaluate the surface (calculation over two steps required as the length and width) or volume (including a 3 rd parameter is the height), or to do simple additions and subtractions. The Pythagoras function indirectly allows to evaluate the height or the width.
As for the tracking mode, it allows you to instantly measure your distance to the lens while you are moving. Finally the inclinometer function accepts that you take measurements not perpendicular to the target, but in an inclined way.
The degree of magnification and image quality: The importance of magnification is that you can zoom in on an image and make a precise choice of your target by removing objects that obstruct the view. As for the quality of the image, it depends on the quality of the telemeter’s lens as well as its lens, but it allows you, just like the zoom, to position your point of aim.
Connectivity : Some models accept the connection with a smartphone or a computer via Bluetooth or the presence of memory cards. This feature facilitates the transfer, retention and interpretation of measurements taken on a more efficient device.
